Filarid nematodes and microfilariae in blood films and biopsy specimens frequently present a challenge to the bench microscopist. Blaine Mathison formerly of the CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria will discuss diagnostic algorithms for the microscopic examination of microfilariae in blood and Onchocerca in tissue. Topics will include a brief overview of Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia spp., Loa loa, Mansonella spp. and Onchocerca volvulus, including geographic distribution, biology, and clinical presentation. The main focus will be on the morphologic identification of these parasites in blood films or biopsy specimens and a diagnostic key will be presented to aid microscopists when faced with these challenges in their laboratories.
